Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced on Wednesday that he will launch a new political party in the state ahead of the 2019 assembly elections.
Addressing the media in Chandigarh, Singh stated that he has applied for a party name and a symbol and that an announcement will be made once the Election Commission has approved it. “Yes, I intend to start a new political party. Once the name and emblem have been approved by the Election Commission, they will be announced. My lawyers are working on it”, he added, “the party will run candidates for all 117 seats in the state”.

Singh announced last week that he will soon start his political party and that he hoped for a seat adjustment with the BJP if the ongoing farmers’ protest against farm rules was settled in their favor. In addition, the former Congress leader said that during his 4.5 years as Chief Minister of Punjab, he fulfilled more than 90% of the pledges set in the 2017 election campaign. Following months of squabbles with Navjot Singh Sidhu, Amarinder Singh was forced to resign from the state cabinet last month.
