Indian political figures sent encouraging words to the Indian cricket team after they were defeated by Pakistan in their opening encounter of the 2017 ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday. Amidst regionalist and communal comments, prominent political figures came out, cutting through untoward remarks and netizens’ rage.
After India was defeated by Pakistan by 10 wickets in their opening encounter of the 2018 ICC T20 World Cup in Dubai on Sunday, Indian political leaders issued encouraging messages to the Virat Kohli-led cricket squad. Congress politician Shashi Tharoor, a lifelong cricket fan, congratulated Pakistan but hoped that India will “turn this result in the final.” Shashi Tharoor, who was at the Dubai International Stadium for the game, remarked, “a few cheerful moments on a dispiriting evening at the Dubai Cricket Stadium. Never have I witnessed India being routed more comprehensively in over half a century of watching international cricket”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and opening partner Mohammad Rizwan breezed through the 152-run chase, reaching the goal in the 18th over to break the World Cup curse and record their first-ever 10-wicket triumph in a T20 encounter.
This was Pakistan’s first World Cup victory over India in any format. It was also their first T20 victory by a margin of ten wickets over any opponent, as well as the biggest opening stand against India in the format. It was India’s first 10-wicket loss in the format.
On Sunday, after India’s loss to Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and legislative leader Shasita Rule tweeted their support for the Indian cricket squad.
