The All India Technical Education Council (AICTE) is changing the mechanical engineering curriculum of all relevant universities across the country. According to The Print, the redesigned course will be more technology-oriented, including 3D printing, drone manufacturing, and information technology (IT) as the subject of the mechanical engineering curriculum. The purpose of this revision of the curriculum is to make the course more specialized in light of the changing expectations of the industry.
AIIMS and IIT Delhi join forces to address a long-standing issue
According to development sources, people with a mechanical engineering background had problems holding positions for automation in the core area. Many curriculums have moved to other areas such as computers and electronics, requiring curriculum changes. Anil Sahasrabudhe, chair of AICTE confirmed the news that the council was criticized for the fact that the mechanical engineering curriculum is old and needs to be updated. Therefore, a committee was formed to change it. “The Commission has almost completed the report and, if approved, will make it part of the AICTE member schools and make it available next year,” he told The Print.
Professor B. Ravi of IIT Bombay leads the judging committee, and Professor PVMRao of IIT Delhi also participates. Dr. Nagahanumia of CMTI Bangalore, Bajirao Gawali, Sangli of Walchandnagar College of Engineering, Professor GK Nanthasuresh of IISc Bangalore, and Dr. U Chandra Sekar who belongs to Wipro3D.
In that statement, AICTE also demonstrates that the number of students in mechanical engineering courses has dropped significantly. Therefore, the purpose of this proposed adaptation was to make the course more attractive to both students and the industry. The revision committee focused on confirming the practicality of most engineering departments and making them more specialized according to industry expectations.
