Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, accused the governing BJP of “polluting” the country’s politics on Monday, claiming that the outcome of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will also determine the destiny of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. According to the opposition leader, there is a surge of anti-BJP sentiment at the state and federal levels. “There is a threat to democracy. By repeatedly lying, the BJP wants to present lies as truth. It not only polluted the rivers but also the politics of the country,” Mr. Yadav claimed. “Now, there is a wave against the BJP. People are fed up with it and are waiting to get rid of it and give the Samajwadi Party a chance in UP,” he added. He said that the assembly elections will determine not just the state’s but also the central government’s fate. In an apparent reference to recent Income Tax searches at the premises of Samajwadi Party leaders in UP, he said, “Fearing defeat, the BJP is now bent on suppressing the opposition by misusing its government institutions.”

“But this has increased public anger against the BJP. People no longer want to see an anti-democratic, anti-people government in power for long,” he said. He said that a significant number of people are joining the Samajwadi Party’s rath yatra and that a comparable attempt by the BJP is a “jugaad,” or make-do effort. The Samajwadi Party’s Samajwadi Vijay Yatra and the BJP’s six rath yatras are now crisscrossing the state. Mr. Yadav also mentioned the alleged mowing of four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri by an SUV carrying BJP members. The son of Union minister Ajay Mishra is among those detained in the case. According to the Samajwadi Party leader, the youth’s future is gloomy under the BJP administration. “Young people have lost their jobs. No arrangement is being made to make girls self-reliant. Only promises are made. People are being misled by promises,” he said. He claims that the BJP talks a lot about “Sanskrit culture” yet does nothing to promote the language’s growth.
