According to a senior government official, Apple supplier Foxconn’s plant near Chennai in India will remain closed for three more days, extending a week-long closure caused by workers’ protests over a food poisoning incident. According to a source close to the situation who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak with the media, the plant is set to begin production with 1,000 personnel on December 30. Last Monday, a separate government source stated the plant was shut down on December 18 and will be closed until December 26.
On Monday morning, the gates of the facility, which is on the outskirts of Chennai, were open and some vehicles were moving in and out, but the area was otherwise deserted. According to media reports, Apple has recently begun trial production of its flagship iPhone 13 at the factory, which creates iPhone 12 models.

According to a police officer from the Superintendent of Police’s office in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Foxconn management has chosen to cease activities at the site for three more days. Employees who have complained about food poisoning or other difficulties at the site in recent months have been asked to submit a complaint with the state labor ministry, according to the officer. The Tamil Nadu State Government has ordered Foxconn to examine services provided to workers, including power backup at hostels, food, and water, while the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health has suggested giving leisure facilities such as a TV, a library, and access to indoor games.
This isn’t the first time employees have expressed dissatisfaction with Apple’s work policies. Workers at a Wistron facility in Bengaluru, which also builds Apple iPhones, allegedly caused over Rs 437 crore in damage in December due to alleged non-payment of promised wages to contract workers, overtime, and 12-hour shifts on a daily basis.
