Recently, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections were contested. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) scored a dominant and one-sided victory, where it managed to triumph over 134 out of the 144 wards. The seat distribution of the remaining 10 wards was as follows: 3 for BJP, 2 each for Congress and Left Front, and the remaining 3 for independent candidates. Even though BJP won more seats than the Left, it was the latter that managed to emerge as the principal opposition. This was because the candidates representing the Left Front were the runners-up in almost two-thirds of the 144 KMC wards.

The ward elections took place on December 19 while following all the COVID-related protocols. 4,959 electoral booths were used for the elections throughout Kolkata. Talking about the statistics, TMC managed to clock in 71.95 percent of the total votes, while Left Front was the runner-up with 11 percent votes. These parties were then followed by BJP with 8.94 percent votes, Congress with 4.47 percent votes, and independent candidates with 3.64 percent votes.
While the Left stood second in nearly 65 wards, Bhartiya Janata Party and Congress came second in almost 50 and 15 wards respectively. Talking about the past results, Trinamool Congress also had managed to secure a one-sided victory in the 2015 KMC elections by winning in 124 wards. The Left Front had won 13 seats, while BJP and Congress had failed to make a strong impression and could only win 5 and 2 seats, respectively.
While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Trinamool Congress for this historic win, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took a sarcastic dig at the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, Sourav Das, by congratulating him for allowing an atmosphere of fear to prevail during the elections.
