Italian sports carmaker Lamborghini had a record year in India in 2021, surpassing the peak sales it crossed in 2019 when it had sold more than one car per week. The rise occurred even as the economy was staggering out of the Covid-induced downshift, and automakers across the globe faced a production deficit due to a semiconductor crunch. Lamborghini is a part of the German auto group Volkswagen, the automaker that sells cars such as the Huracan and Aventador in India, apart from the Urus SUV that it had launched in 2018. In 2019, the firm had reported its largest numbers in India at 52 units, deemed healthy as its cars are priced Rs 4 crore onwards. Sharad Agarwal, head of Lamborghini in India, explained that the bounce-back for the brand had been quicker in 2021 than it had expected, particularly as India had just begun to come out of a harmful second wave of the coronavirus and there was fear about the operation of the business and the economy.
Agarwal stated, “However, the demand has been surprising, and we now have a waiting period between seven months and one year on some of our models. While 2020, the year when the corona outbreak hit the world, was a challenging one for us just like the rest of the industry, things changed positively since October last year. Demand has been strong since,”. The bang in the world of startups, which is creating millionaires at a lightning speed, is one of the pillars that the firm is benefiting from. “A lot of our buyers today are first-timers into the brand, and not from the traditional multi-generational business families. They want to reward themselves for hitting success early on.”The market in which it operates is very narrow and niche, however, Lamborghini has also been driving recent models and variants in India nearly in line with their international launch (such as Huracan STO).
