As of 20th December, Delhi has reported 22 cases of the new mutation of COVID-19, the Omicron variant. In a detailed report about the Omicron patients in Delhi, 19 of the 22 patients were found to have come from abroad. While the remaining three were those who came in contact with them. Out of the 19 patients, 10 had a travel history to Dubai. Four of the patients came from the UK, 2 from South Africa and Tanzania each, and one from Zimbabwe.

As of now, Maharashtra and Delhi are leading the tally of Omicron patients with 65 and 57 patients, respectively. The first Omicron case in Delhi was found on December 5 when a person who had just arrived from Tanzania was diagnosed with the new variant. According to the doctors who treated him, he was showing several symptoms including body pain, weakness, throat pain, and fever. Currently, the number of Omicron patients in India stands at 213.
It is to be noted that even though Omicron is not as deadly as the previous mutations, it is nearly three times as transmissible as the Delta variant. Studies are being conducted to know the effect of this mutation better. The World Health Organization gave it the status of the new variant on November 26. Even though it is a relatively new variant, it has managed to expand its reach to 89 countries as of now. Emerged in South Africa, this variant has also managed to claim lives in the United Kingdom. Recently, the US also reported the first confirmed death due to the Omicron variant.
