The CAT 2021 was conducted in November of eighth. The paper’s format was altered compared to last year. For instance, the number of questions has been reduced from 18 (last year) to 16 this year. The section where the change has been observed is the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension Section (VARC). In this section, there were 26 questions last year. However, 2021 observed the reduction of 2 questions from this section. Some academic heads of prestigious institutions consider the VARC section, slightly more difficult than last year. However, there are some like BYJU’s, who perceive that the section of Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QI) were more difficult.
According to The Academic Head of T.I.M.E. Delhi, Pradeep Pandey, The VARC section was witness to some easy questions as the probable length for the answers was short compared to the other questions. However, the passage that was presented, posed some tricks that could have confused the students. Mr. Pandey further adds that non-MCQ questions had a higher difficulty level. This is because the questions were designed so it poses some confusion for the student while reading them. Here, students did not have the luxury to guess the answers, as it was non-MCQs.

The cut-offs expected for this year’s CAT are high. The VARC section has a cut-off of 50 to 53. While on the other hand DILR and QA expect a cut-off of 40 to 45 and 43 to 46 respectively. The aggregate total cut-off stands at a staggering 124 to 132 marks. This converted to percentage concludes as 95% to 99%. Hence, good institutions would look for students who belong to the above 95% group. Not only has the difficulty of the paper increased, but the cut-offs as well. This falls now on the students to achieve the level of expectation from this year’s CAT exams.
