Getting in touch with people is easier than ever in this day and age of hyper-connectivity. While the globe continues to progress in terms of technical developments, life in cities can be lonely at times. Having meaningful, real-life discussions are becoming increasingly difficult due to tight work schedules, unpredictable sleep patterns, lockdowns, and work-from-home arrangements. How do you cope with your loneliness? Olivia Remes, the creator and host of The Cambridge Presentation Show, a weekly radio show focused on lifestyle and mental health, gave a motivational TEDx talk to help people survive. She recommended meeting new people to aid with loneliness. “The first step in overcoming loneliness is to begin conversing with as many people as possible.”
She acknowledged that this suggestion is easier said than done, but she suggested beginning small and including little conversations with new individuals into your daily routine. Her second advice was to engage in honest conversations with others in order to create meaningful relationships. “You have to reveal about yourself and open up and tell tales about yourself if you want to take your interactions to a whole new level and make genuine connections with people.”

She highlighted how, in today’s world, it’s easy to become engrossed in one’s work and lose connection with friends and loved ones. “I’m sure you’d agree that this is so fascinating that loneliness might be harmful to your health.” The issue is that today’s population is becoming increasingly lonely; in fact, nearly one-third of the population is lonely. You’d think we’d feel more connected with social media, smartphones, and face timing, which allow us to communicate with one another quickly. In reality, we’re more lonely than ever before, more unhappy and nervous than ever before, and people are turning to therapy and drugs to cope.”
