Under the new National Education Policy (NEP), the Ministry of Education on Wednesday notified Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), a four-year course meant for students who want to pursue teaching as a profession. It has been launched by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) in line with NEP.
This course would offer an integrated dual-major degree of BA-BEd, BSc-BEd, and BCom-BEd. Earlier, aspirants had to spend five years to obtain a degree in a specialized discipline and a degree in education to be able to qualify for the job of a school teacher. With this program, they would now require only four years to obtain a dual degree, that is, a degree in any specialized discipline such as History, Mathematics, Science, Arts, Commerce, etc., and a degree in education.
The course will be offered for the first time for the 2022-2023 batch initially in about 50 multidisciplinary colleges across the country. The admission for the course would be done by a National Common Entrance Test, carried out by the National Testing Agency. This would be a step towards the creation of multi-disciplinary education centers housing outstanding courses.

A 2-year BEd course would also be available for those who have already obtained their bachelor’s degree. Further, there has been a discussion regarding making a 1-year BEd course for those who have already taken the four-year multidisciplinary course or those who have obtained their Master’s in a specialized subject.
This step would be revolutionary for the whole education and job sector of the country since it would train students in a multidisciplinary environment, through a blend of Indian values and requirements of global standards.
“A National Mission for Mentoring shall be established, with a large pool of outstanding senior/retired faculty – including those with the ability to teach in Indian languages – who would be willing to provide short and long-term mentoring/professional support to university/college teachers”, reads the NEP.
