However, there are some institutes that follows the CGPA marking method. CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Points Average, it is the average of grade points obtained by a student in all subjects. It does not include the sixth additional subject. Many educational boards, including CBSE in India uses CGPA format result. CBSE uses CGPA in their class 10th and 12th board examination result. However, there are many students and parents who are not aware of the simple formula that they should use to convert CGPA into percentage.
Most colleges in the US follow a GPA method which is similar to the CGPA method of India. However, colleges in the US use a scale of 4.0 for GPA whereas in India, the scale is 10.

In the Indian grade system, percentage is divided into four divisions.
- 75% and above – Distinction

- 50% to 60% – Second Division
- 40% to 50% – Third Division
How to convert the percentage to CGPA
The method to convert CGPA to percentage might be different for all institutions. However, the most common method of calculating percentage from CGPA is (percentage/90)*10. To convert percentage to CGP on a scale of 10 you need to divide the percentage received by 9.5. This will give you your CGPA. So the formula is percentage/9.5.
For instance, if you have received 70. To find the CGPA, you need to divide 70 by 9.5. The CGPA will be 7.4.
Also, as mentioned earlier that many institutions in India have different grading system hence the calculation might also change accordingly. Often most universities in India follow online percentage calculator.
CGPA to Percentage Calculation of Major Indian Universities
Maulana Abul Kalam Aza University (MAKAUT)
MAKAUT follows the 7 point grading system and it is quite difficult to convert the CGPA of this university into percentage. To convert the CGPA received from MAKAUT, you need to first subtract by 0.75 and then multiply by 10. Hence the formula is (CGPA – 0.75)*10. The Visvesvaraya Technology University (VTU) also follows the same formula.
APJ Abdul Kalam Technology University (KTU)
KTU follows the 10 point grading system but the university has a unique formula for calculation. Compared to other universities, this formula is bit difficult and you need to understand the concept of Ci first. Also, you first need to calculate CGPA and then convert it into percentage. Here is the formula that you need to follow.
CGPA = Sum of (Ci*GPi)/Sum of (Ci)
Once you have calculated the CGPA, you need to multiply it by 10 and deduct 3.75 to get the percentage.
Percentage = 10 * CGPA – 3.75
Anna University
According to Anna University grading system, if the full marks of a paper is 100 marks and the topper gets 90 the it will be considered 100%. If someone scores 70 out of 100 then the CGPA for that student will be 100/90*70. This is how the university calculates the CGPA on the scale of 10.
Knowing how to convert CGPA to percentage is very important for students in India as well as in the US. Most exams accept percentage and require converting CGPA or GPA to percentage. Knowing to convert CGPA to percentage would be hence beneficial for you.
