CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average, it is the grade a student receives in decimal number for a specific course of study. It is used to examine a student’s performance in academics. When a student gets marks, it is mostly in percentage form. There are grades assigned to specific range of percentages, grades are essentially in form of letters. These letters re A,B,C,D and F. A student performing excellent in a particular course receives grade A whereas the student who receives the least amount of number receives grade F.

However, the grading system is different for each educational and country. You can find more about the grading system of a particular institute by visiting their website.  As mentioned earlier, the CGPA system in India is very similar to the US however the grading scale is different. In India most institution uses the scale of 10 or 7. However, many major institute only provides percentages to students. Some top institutions in the country like NIIT and IIT has their own grading system.

Division of grade based on Indian percentage system

In the Indian grade system, percentage is divided into four divisions.

  • 75% and above – Distinction
  • 60% to 75% – First Division
  • 50% to 60% – Second Division
  • 40% to 50% – Third Division

How to convert the percentage to CGPA

The method to convert CGPA to percentage might be different for all institutions. However, the most common method of calculating percentage from CGPA is (percentage/90)*10. To convert percentage to CGP on a scale of 10 you need to divide the percentage received by 9.5. This will give you your CGPA. So the formula is percentage/9.5.

For instance, if you have received 70. To find the CGPA, you need to divide 70 by 9.5. The CGPA will be 7.4.

Also, as mentioned earlier that many institutions in India have different grading system hence the calculation might also change accordingly. Often most universities in India follow online percentage calculator.

MAKAUT follows the 7 point grading system and it is quite difficult to convert the CGPA of this university into percentage. To convert the CGPA received from MAKAUT, you need to first subtract by 0.75 and then multiply by 10. Hence the formula is (CGPA – 0.75)*10. The Visvesvaraya Technology University (VTU) also follows the same formula.

APJ Abdul Kalam Technology University (KTU)

KTU follows the 10 point grading system but the university has a unique formula for calculation. Compared to other universities, this formula is bit difficult and you need to understand the concept of Ci first. Also, you first need to calculate CGPA and then convert it into percentage. Here is the formula that you need to follow.

CGPA = Sum of (Ci*GPi)/Sum of (Ci)

Once you have calculated the CGPA, you need to multiply it by 10 and deduct 3.75 to get the percentage.

Percentage = 10 * CGPA – 3.75
