Recently, India’s vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu was present to distribute Nehru & Tagore Literacy Awards to people contributing greatly towards education and nation development. During the award ceremony, he emphasized the need for adult education. He said that the nation couldn’t call itself developed if not even 15 percent of the population is educated. Further supporting his point, the vice-president also talked about the nation’s capability in the IT industry and digitalization services. However, he also emphasized that basic adult education needs attention. Voicing his opinions on the imbalance in literacy, he further said, “We have made significant strides in the field of education over the past 7 decades. However, there still exists a huge imbalance in basic literacy skills in our society. This is a cause of concern.”Talking about the possible solutions to this grave issue, Venkaiah Naidu suggested that the schools should encourage their students to take up adult education programs.
