In the wake of the COVID pandemic, India is seeking commitment from its G20 counterparts for mutual recognition of travel documents. Those travel documents will mainly include vaccination certificates. Recently, during the 2021 G20 summit hosted by Italy, India put up the talk for recognition of vaccination certificates for international travel to G20 nations. On a positive note, some countries also seemed to show support for India’s stand.
This initiative has been taken by India to ensure the order of normalcy, at least within the G20 members. This is also expected to help in restarting travel and other economic activities as well. India’s stand for mutual recognition of travel documents was represented by the commerce and industry minister of India, Piyush Goyal. The talks that were held on Friday, if accepted by the G20 framework, will prove pivotal in restoring normalcy within G20 nations.

Currently, the G20 summit of 2021 is going on in Italy. Various representatives and leaders of G20 nations come together and discuss prevalent issues and try to find a solution to them. Founded by G7, G20 is the group of 19 biggest economies of the world plus the European Union. Chaired by the head of the host nation, this year Mario Draghi is hosting the G20 summit.
Recently even the WHO head, Tedros Adhanom, wrote to the G20 leaders asking them to ensure that everyone gets vaccinated. WHO has also urged the G20 to help them achieve its target of vaccinating 40% of the global population by the end of 2021.
Since the pandemic has struck the world, every sector has fallen prey to it. Especially the health and tourism sectors have been badly hit. India’s demand for mutual recognition of travel documents is a step towards ensuring order to the already chaotic world.
