On the set of his new film 83, depicting the underdog Indian cricket team’s victory at the 1983 World Cup, actor Ranveer Singh described a “spooky” incident. Ranveer Singh, who plays former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev in the film, spoke to Film Companion about filming the presentation ceremony and how director Kabir Khan wanted everything to be perfect. Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, though, marked his presence on the sets just as the shot was properly poised. Clive was the captain of the West Indies team in 1983. “We were at Lords shooting with the genuine cup at the presentation ceremony when they lifted the trophy.” We’re standing on this famous balcony, where the incident occurred all those years ago. Because these are the moving images that have been seen over and over again over the years, Kabir sir was quite meticulous about the presentation ceremony. “We had to get down to the T,” Ranveer said, adding, “Now, everybody is revved up this morning.”

We’re planning to do many cameras, one shot for the presenting ceremony. Everyone there, including the 50-80 individuals on the balcony, had to be on their game. The boys are replaying the tape 50, 80, and 100 times to perfect their synchronization. Everything is in place. Clive Lloyd, the captain of the West Indies, appeared on the set unexpectedly. We were there to photograph the ceremony. He was on the balcony at the time. ‘Are we seeing things?’ we wondered. Nobody could have predicted this. We were a lot alike. ‘What is Clive Lloyd up to these days?’ So, in the flesh, Clive Lloyd arrives on set that morning. He’s seated next to Kabir sir, watching the presentation be recreated.” Ranveer concluded by noting that in his ten-year career, he has never experienced such enthusiasm about a film. Kabir Khan’s film 83 premiered on December 24.
