The West Bengal government has chosen a three-tier model of skilling, with vocational training facilities at panchayats, ITI institutes at blocks, and a polytechnic college at every sub-division of the state, according to a minister on Saturday. Minister of Technical Education and Skill Development Humayun Kabir stated that his department is working to establish at least one polytechnic institute in each of the state’s sub-divisions.
He said the government has chosen 495 vocational training centres for upgrading and is working with the labour department to determine district-level skill needs. “Our department has implemented a three-tier model of skilling with vocational training centres at the panchayat level, an ITI at the block level, and a polytechnic institute at the sub-divisional level, realizing the value of an experience-based education and hands-on training,” the minister added.
He said the government has set aside Rs 1,285 crore for technical education and training in the current financial year, speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce’s 4th Globalised Education Forum. 185 polytechnic colleges and 283 ITIs have been operationalized under the “Utkarsh Bangla” scheme. They’ve identified 495 vocational training centres that need to be upgraded, and they’re attempting to merge their departments with the labour department to develop career counselling centres and district skill development plans to identify skill gaps and introduce demand-oriented courses in all of West Bengal’s districts.
The state currently has 628 vocational training centres that are actively pushing students to create and propose their ideas, which could lead to future industry-academia collaborations, according to the minister. He added that the state government planned to establish centres of excellence in high-potential industries in partnership with industry associations. He noted that the state’s annual goal for imparting skill is around 6 lakh in both institutional and non-institutional modes.
