The Maharashtra government has started to restore things to normal as the effect of COVID seems to fade away. However, there are two schools in Mumbai that are yet to open. And no, the reason is not the refusal of teachers or students to come to the school. The reason is something else and it doesn’t seem that the schools will reopen anytime soon.
The two schools had been turned into COVID care centers for the prisoners when the pandemic was in its full fury. The two schools in question are the Bombay Municipal Corporation-run schools at Byculla. Prisoners of Arthur Road Jail and Byculla District Prison are being treated there as of now. They are yet to vacate the schools. As a result, many students of these schools are in danger of lagging in their studies while their counterparts have started to go to their schools.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar that the talks were on with the jailer. According to the jailer, while the talks are on, the jailer has been asked to vacate one of the schools so that the students could somewhat revert to offline education. As per the jailer, they had chosen these two schools by keeping in mind several factors, safety being the most important among them. The jail authorities have been hoping to get another location that fits all the parameters regarding safety.
It is to be noted that the Bombay Municipal Corporation has reopened schools on December 15. While the Maharashtra government has been trying hard to revert to the old ways of education, this issue has presented itself as a hurdle that is needed to be overcome.
