Little Amal, a girl who traveled 5,000 miles to find her mother who went out to find some food but never came back. Amal, which is Arabic for hope, is true to her name as she is no ordinary girl. She is the central character of a theater project called “The Walk,” which launched in Gaziantep, Turkey, near the Syrian border, and ended in Manchester in the UK. She traveled through 8 European countries from July to November. After the ‘Walk’ ended she went on to the climate conference in Glasgow and is now visiting the Hague from November 15 to 21 as she was invited by the Hague’s new cultural palace, Amare.

The message ‘Don’t forget about us’ was embodied by her journey. As the COVID Pandemic has dragged on for a while many families were separated from their children. The message embodies how important this issue is. Amir Nizar Zuabi, the initiative’s artistic director stated that people are focusing on so many other issues this issue just doesn’t seem important to them, which it should. With this initiative, they want to focus on the potential of these refugees and not the dire circumstances. On the website of the initiative, the art auction is called “one of the most innovative and adventurous public artworks ever undertaken,”.
Jan Zoet, the head of the Amare cultural center in The Hague, mentioned Amal’s invitation to give young refugees hope for their future. The Hague is going to have a six-day cultural program inspired by her stays in each of the cities during ‘The Walk’. During her time in The Hague, she went to the miniature city of Madurodam, which is a tourist attraction with miniatures of the most important landmarks in the Netherlands. Amal’s bravery inspires young refugees every day.
