Former India bowler Paras Mhambrey, one of the minds behind the country’s extremely successful A and U-19 team programs, filed for the role of senior squad bowling coach on October 25, according to BCCI sources. Mhambrey, who has worked with the National Cricket Academy for more than a decade, is regarded as a long-time loyal lieutenant of Rahul Dravid, who is largely expected to be the next head coach. He has also served as head coach for the India U-19 and India A teams on several visits. But, more importantly, Dravid and Mhambrey created the National Cricket Academy’s coaching curriculum to enable a smooth transition from U-19 to A teams, and finally to the main squad.
Mhambrey’s application might be a crucial step toward Dravid officially throwing his hat in the ring as well. According to BCCI insiders, Dravid has been persuaded to take over the post that will be left vacant after Ravi Shastri’s departure following the team’s T20 World Cup campaign. Only after he applies for the job will the transaction be finalized. Mhambrey’s application indicates that members of his core team want to cooperate with the national squad.

Mhambrey, 49, represented India in two Tests and three One-Day Internationals between 1996 and 1998. He was a key member of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy side in the 1990s, appearing in 91 first-class games and taking 284 wickets, including 13 five-wicket hauls.
However, it was as a coach that he gained a lot of respect in the Indian cricketing community. He led Bengal to consecutive Ranji Trophy finals and also coached Baroda. He also spent time with the Mumbai Indians before joining the National Cricket Academy.
