On the lines of Punjab, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has reached an agreement with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for the December Municipal Corporation (MC) elections. According to the seat-sharing agreement, the SAD will contest 19 seats, while the BSP will contest the remaining 16. Last year, the SAD president proclaimed his intention to run for all 35 MC seats. They have, however, agreed on a seat-sharing deal following their alliance with the BSP.
According to Kamboj, the two parties are fighting elections together for the first time in 25 years. The SAD and BJP contested as alliance partners in the last MC elections. The BJP ran for 22 of the whole 26 seats, while the SAD ran for four. The saffron party got 20 seats, while the SAD received only one.
Amarinder Singh declares that he will “found a new party” ahead of the Punjab elections
The Shiromani Akali Dal has joined forces with the Bahujan Samaj Party ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Here’s why the SAD is banking its hopes on the BSP after splitting with the BJP. The BSP ran for 111 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, and except former BSP Punjab unit president Avtar Singh Karimpuri, all 110 candidates lost their security deposits.
Despite saving his security deposit, Karimpuri finished fourth in the Phillaur (SC) constituency. The BSP received 1.59 per cent of the vote in the seats it ran for. The BJP, which ran in 23 seats in coalition with the SAD, won three and received 29.95 per cent of the vote.
While declaring the coalition on Saturday, SAD President Sukhbir Badal and BSP General Secretary Satish Mishra referred to the alliance’s “historic” performance in 1996. And, according to a top Akali leader, the SAD began working on a deal with the BSP in the 2022 elections soon after splitting with the BJP. Before reaching an agreement with the BSP, the leader stated that the party had a two-month-long poll conducted by an agency, as well as input from local Akali leaders.
