With the Center cutting excise duties on petrol and diesel, the Chandigarh government also announced a reduction of 7 rupees per litre in value-added tax (VAT) on fuels making them cheaper in the territory of the Union. “After the Centre cut levy on petrol and diesel, Chandigarh Administration has reduced the VAT by 7 rupees on Petrol and diesel as of midnight of November 4,” an official statement said.

According to the notification issued by the Department of Excise and Taxes, UT Chandigarh, on Thursday, the VAT rate on gasoline was reduced from 22.5% to 15.24% and on diesel from 14.02% to 6.66%. On Wednesday, the central government announced a cut in excise duties on petrol and diesel by ₹5 and 10, respectively, lowering retail rates from all-time highs.
By reducing the excise duty, the Union government had urged states to proportionally reduce the VAT on petrol and diesel to relieve consumers. On Thursday, the Haryana government also announced a reduction in value-added tax (VAT) on fuels, making them cheaper in the state-run BJP-JJP at ₹12 per litre. Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal urged Congress-led government Charanjit Singh Channi to lower the VAT rate on petrol and diesel to bring relief to consumers.
“High fuel prices are devouring the pocket of Pbis (Punjabis). Late fare reduction from the Center is half a measure! On behalf of SAD and Punjab, I ask that CM Charanjit Channi take note of the other states and reduce Gasoline and diesel prices skyrocketing by Rs 10. Punjab has already suffered enough!” Mr Badal tweeted.
