Dengue cases have peaked in the city of Chandigarh as a total of 465 cases were recorded during November while last year only 116 cases were recorded. Previously in 2017 when cases were at an all-time high only 336 cases were reported in Chandigarh. Experts believed the numbers should have declined due to the temperature observed in November but no change has been observed till now. The Director of Health Services Dr. Suman Singh stated that the ideal temperature of a mosquito to breed and as temperatures are high during the day it is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Nevertheless, the cases were reduced to half. Now around 20 cases are recorded. In 2017, 1951 cases were reported, in 2018 it fell to 301, and then it subsequently declined to 286 and 265 the following years. In 2021 there were 1354 cases reported. Around 10438 notices and 478 challans have been issued. The city Mohali accounts for half of the dengue cases reported. It has become the center of the dengue outbreak as it has recorded around 3168 cases and 32 have died. Previously, in 2013 the largest dengue outbreak was recorded in Mohali.
India struggles as dengue cases increase amid the COVID outbreak
The Punjab government has issued a statement saying they have ramped up the dengue testing in all parts of Punjab. The larvae of Aedes Aegypti were found in 35000 homes. Around 15 lakh homes were inspected thoroughly by state government officials. Cities like Chandigarh and Mohali are facing a huge issue considering the spread of dengue. The Punjab government has said they will take all the precautions necessary to stop the spread of dengue so no more people are affected by it. The cases are declining gradually and they will be back to normal after some time. Experts have stated that the prolonged monsoon is the reason for this dengue outbreak.
