Amidst the rising threats presented by the Omicron variant of coronavirus, Mumbai on December 26 recorded 922 new coronavirus cases, the highest in over six months. The previous time Mumbai documented a per-day infection count greater than this dates back to June 4, when the city had measured 922 cases. The numbers published today by the health authorities noted a 21 percent jump as pertained to December 25, when there were 757 new infections recorded. During the 24 hours, the city also noted two casualties. Amid the surging cases, the Maharashtra administration on December 24 declared openly the imposition of Section 144 of CrPC, which bans the gathering of more than five persons, from 9 pm to 6 am.

The government has also authorized restaurants, gyms, spas, and cinemas halls to run at 50 percent capacity. Moreover, it requested that the number of attendees should not be more than 100 for social, political, and spiritual occasions in indoor areas. Regarding the open spaces, the number of attendees should be less than 250 or 25 percent of the capacity of the space, whichever is less. Maharashtra records 108 out of the 422 Omicron cases observed in the country so far. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope, while requesting the residents to practice caution and adhere to safety standards, announced a lockdown would be required only if the per-day liquid medical oxygen demand rises to 800 metric tonnes. However, Tope did not indicate the quantity of medical oxygen being presently used per day. “While Delta continues to be the most prevalent VOC (Variant of Concern) globally, the Omicron variant has completely displaced it in southern Africa and is on track to become the dominant variant in the UK and elsewhere,” the INSACOG said.
