“I think that the formation of farm laws is a result of politics, so the solution has to be political too. They (farmers) have to show their power politically. We’ve seen this recently during the bypolls when the ruling BJP lost in many regions, and the fuel prices were slashed drastically,” she told the media on the sidelines of the party’s second foundation day celebrations in Ambala Cantonment.
Nirmal Singh, the party’s founder, and her father disagreed with the comment, saying that it was her personal view. However, he added that they will always back the farmers. A resolution supporting the farmers’ cause was also passed by the HDF. Nirmal Singh’s stronghold, Mohra, has been at the center of the farmers’ agitation and has witnessed the most protesters. The majority of farm union officials and activists are from the same geographic area.
After being denied a party ticket, Nirmal and his daughter, who are regarded close to the Hoodas, left the Congress soon before the 2019 assembly elections. Both ran as Independent candidates but were defeated. However, the party failed its first test following its foundation when its mayoral candidate, Amisha Chawla, forfeited security deposits. The candidates were only able to win two of the 20 wards in the 2020 municipal elections.
