The local Municipal Corporation has purchased six mobile toilets, which will be positioned across the city to prevent individuals from defecating in public. The MC had just severed connections with the Sulabh service, which had been engaged to maintain and repair public toilets after residents and market welfare organizations complained about their deplorable state. The Chandigarh Tribune reported earlier this year on the city’s unusable public restrooms. The public restrooms featured broken gates, no water, uneven excreta disposal, odour, and no gender symbols, according to the complaint. Earlier this year, the city was granted ODB++ designation for the third time.
According to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Swachh Bharat Mission ODF protocol, a city/ward/work circle can be notified/declared as ODF++ if no one is found defecating/urinating in the open at any time of day, and all community and public toilets are functional and well-maintained. The full cistern, tap, and pipes were discovered missing near the Shalimar mall, at the road separating sectors 5 and 6. There wasn’t even a light holder. This restroom is located on the main road.

The situation in Sector 5 opposite Shiksha Sadan was even worse. In the men’s toilet, the cistern and the pipe that connects the washbasin were discovered missing. The tank’s connection pipe was also discovered to be leaking outside. The initiative is part of the Haryana government’s broader Swachh Bharat Abhiyan activities. According to Rajesh Jogpal, the municipal commissioner, this will allow information on such toilets to be available on the move. “Public restrooms at malls, market areas, parks, community centres, and government offices will be accessible online,” he said.
