Chandigarh Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chandigarh Dilsher Chandel on Saturday blasted Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu after he told his party workers to make “cops wet their pants” at a political march. Mr. Chandel explained that a video has gained a lot of attention where Mr. Sidhu while handling a public rally in Chandigarh, made a mockery of the police and instructed his party workers to make “cops wet their pants”. The DSP criticized the Congress leader’s slanderous statement asserting that the politicians must not forget the sacrifices made by the security forces. “Without police protection, even a rickshaw puller will not listen to his speech”, Mr. Chandel let out slamming Mr. Sidhu. Politicians should not make a mockery of policemen on duty like this. They are just performing their duty and politicians should not demoralize them by making such statements,” he asserted. He added, “The security forces have dignity. (Mr) Sidhu has defamed the whole Punjab Police by making such shameful comments.”

A sub-inspector also published a video message criticizing the comment. Congress MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu has supported the policemen and applauded them for their part during militancy and COVID-19 times. The dispute surged after Sidhu, at a recent rally in Sultanpur Lodhi while pointing towards sitting MLA Navtej Singh Cheema, told that he can “make a ‘thanedar’ (policeman) wet his pants”. A video clip of Sidhu remarking went viral on social media tempting a sharp response from some police officials and political leaders. Punjab Lok Congress president and retired chief minister Amarinder Singh said it was unhappy that the men in uniform were being offended. Remarking on the viral videos of the Chandigarh DSP and the sub-inspector, Ludhiana MP Bittu praised the Punjab police for their part in eradicating terrorism from the state.
