Telenor and Google Cloud, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., have formed cooperation to digitalize Telenor’s global operations and are evaluating methods to offer combined services to customers, the two firms announced on Monday. Telenor’s IT and network will benefit from Google Cloud’s services, and the companies will collaborate to give digital tools to Telenor’s consumers, according to their respective CEOs. Telenor, established in Oslo, has 172 million users and generates around half of its revenue in Asia and half in the Nordics.
Telenor’s CEO, Sigve Brekke, stated that the digitization initiative will be a major transformation for the company, but it is also part of its goal to find new revenue streams. He remarked, “I believe the future of telecoms is to deliver value in addition to connecting customers.” Telenor needs to establish a cloud-based business as networks become more reliant on software, and Google’s data management, machine learning, and artificial intelligence capabilities make it a strong fit, according to Brekke. “We can make our process work more smoothly by digitizing it,” Brekke explained. “When you’re shifting some of your backend functions, you can detect disruptions before they happen… you can smooth out consumer experiences and make them better.”

According to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, “digitalizing the fundamental operations of a telecommunications firm as large as Telenor is novel to Google Cloud, as are the combined customer offerings.” A platform to assist small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in migrating to digital operations is one of the first services the two organizations plan to offer jointly. Kurian explained, “It’s not only about optimizing data centers and shifting them to the cloud.” “The work we’re doing with SMEs…we’re establishing a collaborative offering to a customer sector, not just as a technology supplier.” This cooperation will be very beneficial.
