The newly-mutated Omicron variant has proved to be an extremely fast-spreading variant of COVID. It has been just a little over a month since WHO classified it as the new nutation of the Corona Virus, however, it has already made its presence known in 89 countries. And now, it has started claiming lives as well. It has been reported that a man from the US has died of Omicron. He belonged to the area of Texas and is reported to be unvaxxed. The Harris County Health Department has confirmed the death.nIt has been said that that the person to die from the Omicron variant aged between 50 and 60 years. The patient was facing severe complications from the Omicron variant and to make matters worse, he was unvaccinated. Confirming the first Omicron death in the US, the county judge Lina Hidalgo tweeted, “Sad to report the first local fatality from the Omicron variant of COVID-19. A man in his 50’s from the eastern portion of Harris County who was not vaccinated. Please- get vaccinated and boosted”.

It is to be seen how much more damage this new variant is capable of inflicting. However, the US is not the only country to report Omicron-related deaths. In early December, the UK also marked its first death. As of now, 12 people have died due to this variant, and 104 are recovering in the hospitals. The variant that emerged in South Africa, has gone to become the fastest-spreading variant to date. According to a report by the US Centre for Disease Control, as of now, 73% of cases of COVID-19 in the whole US are due to the Omicron variant.
