The party that has hardly any cadre, was badly defeated in the Lok Sabha elections from Chandigarh in 2019 and doesn’t include any famous or known faces. With just about nothing going in its favor, it is intriguing to see how AAP pulled off a spectacular show in the MC elections. A vote for change. That’s what it got as many voters rejected Congress and BJP that had been dictating the MC since its origin 25 years ago. While the two huge parties had commenced preparations quite early, AAP decided to test the election waters at a delayed stage. After it came it did not hold back. Guidance was even handed out to senior leaders to contest the poll. The success was all the more worthwhile as some AAP candidates defeated kingpins of BJP, a sitting and two former mayors, and Congress, a former mayor.

AAP candidate also won against senior BJP leader and two-time councilor Heera Negi, BJP’s Purvanchal chief Gopal Shukla and sitting councilor Sunita Dhawan. The outcome indicated AAP performed well in all parts of the city —rural, colonies, and urban localities. It got enormous backing in villages and colonies, traditionally the vote bank of Congress. From ward number 1 to 35, all AAP candidates gave a strong battle even though many did not make it. In some seats, they missed by small margins. If those seats went their way, it would have appeared as a clear winner. With four seats less than the majority, it will be intriguing to watch how AAP prepares to grab the mayoral seat. BJP retains 12 seats and one vote of its MP Kirron Kher.
