The presence of President Xi at COP26 has long been questioned. He is believed not to have left China since early 2020. China frequently announces President Xi’s trip intentions at the last minute, according to diplomats. One person stated: “We never lose faith. And we’re still making the case for his personal presence.”
Instead, Vice-Environmental Minister Zhao Yingmin and veteran Xie Zhenhua, who was reappointed as China’s top climate envoy earlier this year after a three-year absence, would most likely represent the government. On September 19, UK COP President Alok Sharma told the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme that President Xi Jinping’s presence was still up in the air: “The subject of whether President Xi Jinping is going to come, that hasn’t yet been verified.”
The United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021, commonly known as COP26, will be the 26th such conference. It will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31 to November 12, 2021, and will be presided over by Alok Sharma.
