Tajamul Islam, a 13-year-old kickboxer from Kashmir, won gold in the U-14 division there at World Kickboxing Championship which was held in Cairo, Egypt on 22 October. Islam is the very first Kashmiri girl who represented India in the contest, which ran between October 18 and October 24. In the finals, Islam beat Argentina’s Lalina. Islam, the third of her family’s 5 children, was born in Tarkpora, a remote town in northern Kashmir’s Bandipora region, 56 kilometres from Srinagar.
Islam competed in four battles during the event, the first two of which she faced talented players. Her 3rd and 4th matches were all against athletes from France and Argentina, correspondingly, according to the Times of India. Concerning the final, Islam stated that her competitors were swift. “But I maintained my calm, and it worked off,” she told TOI when she got back home.

Islam is a seventh-grade student at Army Goodwill School in Bandipora and a goodwill ambassador for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. She stated that she represented India in the under-9 division in Italy in 2016, while 90 other countries competed. Even as an eight-year-old, she already won gold. She stated that India has 30 participants in various age or weight categories competing in the global championships this year. Islam expressed her desire to become an orthopaedic surgeon, saying, “I won’t shatter and also reconnect the bones and became a ‘bone and joint’ physician.” She went on to say that it had been her mum who would always support her and compelled her father to let her play the game. In a Twitter message, he stated how she has done remarkably well in the field in recent years, and also that her path, which has been marked by “amazing dedication and incomparable perseverance,” would serve as an example to many young people around the country.
