Sidhu stated that the recruiting will be done on merit and that the process will be overseen by Puncom to maintain openness.
The Mayor stated that this is the first time such a step for direct recruitment of sanitation personnel has been launched, for which the MC House passed a resolution that was transmitted to the local bodies department. Previously, sanitation employees were employed by contractors.

The cabinet also voted to enable towns to hire more karamcharis and sewermen on a contract basis, reversing its previous decision of March 18, 2017. The cabinet determined that due process should be followed and that persons with suitable experience should be given priority in such hirings.
However, after careful study, the cabinet determined that employees provided by service providers/contractors under outsourcing arrangements could not be regularised or hired by the government even through direct contract. It was recognized that such personnel could not be added to the government’s payroll in light of the existing law as enshrined by the Supreme Court.
The Municipal Corporation (MC) house unanimously approved manual sweeping of the city on Tuesday, as well as the decommissioning of the automated sweeping system. MC agreed to the hiring of 1,334 sanitation personnel in order to implement manual sweeping.
The MC brought 12 agenda items to the house meeting, which began with a condolence meeting in remembrance of Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, his wife Nirmal Milkha Singh, and the two sewer guys who were killed while fulfilling their responsibilities.
