This year was marked by a highly unfortunate event where the US-backed government in Afghanistan fell out of power. The reign of the whole country fell in the hands of the Taliban. To combat this humanitarian crisis, various Muslim nations have taken the pledge to unlock hundreds of millions of dollars worth of assets in the country with the help of the United Nations.
On Sunday, a special meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) 57 members was held in Pakistan. The member nations have taken the pledge to unlock the frozen assets with the UN to keep up the financial flow within Afghanistan’s economy to prevent it from crumbling. After the US-backed government fell in Afghanistan and the world’s most notorious terrorist organization held the reins of power, international communities have frozen billions of dollars of assets in the country.
After being knocked out of the T20 World Cup, is it time for India to rethink their strategy?
Pakistan has also earlier urged the world to provide Afghanistan with much-needed humanitarian assistance. The Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has also urged the world leaders to separate the Taliban government from the Afghan citizens.
The meeting on Sunday also concluded with yet another resolution where the world leaders pledged to create a team of Muslim scholars to hold talks with the Taliban government over a myriad of topics. The topics, more or less, include tolerance in Islam and equal rights to education to women.
However, most of the countries are yet to officially recognize the Taliban as the new government. The last time when the Taliban came into power was from 1996 to 2001, only Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and UAE recognized it officially. It is to be seen what lays ahead for Afghanistan.
