There has been a major surge in cases of Child hepatitis in the UK. Government scientists are investigating whether a mutation of the cold virus could be behind a rise in hepatitis cases that has led to eight children needing liver transplants.
UKHSA‘s chief medical advisor, Professor Susan Hopkins, says that officials were still looking at a range of possible factors that could be behind the increase, but “the most likely” trigger was an adenovirus – a group of common viruses which usually cause colds, vomiting, and diarrhea in children. “Transplants in this age group are extremely rare so therefore we are concerned, and we want to understand why this is happening and what else we can do,” she told.
